The iconic Tokyu Department Store in Shibuya closes its doors today. When it opened in 1967, it was a sign of the changing times, of rapid Japanese economic growth after WW2, and a home to a new generation of housewives who were free to be wives and mothers alone, instead of working in factories like the previous generation of women had done. It will be replaced by a megalopolis like building that looks to be the tallest in the area, and will open in 2027.
