“What a wonderful evening. Thank you Rionne, for bringing light to this subject! My heart ached for the mothers trying to give their children a good life while hiding their struggles. What pure love. Watching your documentary and the panel discussion made me think deeply about Japan’s future. I think we all agree, it's time for change.”
After watching this documentary, I realized that the problem of single mothers in Japan has deep roots. It is difficult for them to take care of their children even though they want to work, and even if they do work, they are not paid enough. This is not their own responsibility, but a problem with the social system. Although I am Japanese, I have not thought about the issue of single mothers. I think that the director's point of view in this documentary is what I have failed to see. I hope that more people will watch this film and I pray that society will improve!
It has become commonplace for Japanese people to be unable to see directly, to become numb, and to pretend that they do not see. This is an important issue for the present and future of Japan. A single mother who is not protected.
This is a wonderful film that unfolds from a historical background, from domestic and international perspectives, from a calm viewpoint unique to the director, Rionne McAvoy, and brilliantly shows why this has happened and how abnormal and problematic it is in comparison to the rest of the world.
“What a beautiful film! Your film will definitely help people to speak out, as they should! Japan needs to change badly, but a lot of pressure will have to be applied before there is any chance of that.
Both my mother and myself are single mothers. I used to take it for granted that I had to put up with a lot, but I realized that this was not the case. This documentary made me feel as if I was released from the days I spent blaming myself and suffering. I hope that many people will watch this documentary and deepen their understanding.
“Single mothers in Japan struggle enormously, despite living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world. This is the result of a toxic confluence of social expectations, corporate stigma and government negligence. Your film takes no sides, and presents the facts as they simply are. A masterpiece in social documentary filmmaking.”
“It was a very good film that captured well the harsh realities that single mothers face in Japan. It showed the realities that exist today, such as the lack of support from the government due to conditions that are not rational, and the difficulty single mothers have in finding a place to turn to. But the best part is that single mothers in the film did not give up, they are all looking at the future, and their future will never be in the dark again, thanks to Rionne’s documentary.”
“Rionne, thank you for getting out there and working hard to highlight a group of struggling people with no voice. Bravo sir!”
“Thank you for showing the film yesterday. The movie left a lasting impression on me.”
We would like to express our appreciation for your time and support. Your documentary and the dialogue inspired the participants and myself in different ways, but all in considering what we can do. The topics such as single motherhood and child poverty are not something we think about in our day-to-day work, but I believe by watching your film, these topics are now in our minds and thoughts. Thank you also for your honest dialogue in the Q&A session afterwards.
I am in shock and I want to do something to help!
It was a meaningful experience to watch a great film
After watching this film, I thought "In Japan, society and politics are cold toward single mothers, and that's why mothers are having a really hard time. It's a shame that Japan is too ignorant of what single mothers in Japan are going through."
“Your film is simply amazing but also heartbreaking. I learnt so much, but I know what will have the most impact, will be what remains in people’s hearts and minds once they leave the cinema. What a brilliant piece of work Mr. McAvoy.”
“Rionne, congratulations on the film, I found it incredibly informative on a topic that I was not fully aware of the magnitude of the issue. Beyond the topic, I thought the documentary itself was extremely well directed, filmed, and edited. I know you did all that yourself and I salute you! My wife was there with me that night at the screening, and she cried a lot during the film. As parents of a 14 year, we know how tough it is to do this “job” with two people. We can’t fathom how tough it is, how mentally challenging, how stressful, to do it alone and without the support from both the other parent and also from society as a whole. I love Japan, been here 28 years and there is so much to love about the country and the people. However, on issues like this, it is also incredibly backward and the stigma associated is unjust. So again, thank you for bringing visibility to this topic.”
“I am a single mother. After my divorce I lived with four children (ages range from toddler to high school) on my own and of course I was struggling facing now a life on my own. At that time in my country, single moms still were judged and put into a box especially when things did not go well. In our culture there is a high standard among mothers what they have to do, what they need to represent and what they have to do for their children. Being alone meant of course double work for the single parent, double effort, less support and very often less money.
Nevertheless my country is quite advanced in protecting the child’s well being and therefore the father is always somehow in the picture - even if it is just financially. And - a very important factor is also that being a single mother (or father) is (unfortunately) nowadays very common. Anyway is the financial struggle and the workload only two aspects - for me the emotional side of the whole situation is often forgotten. During the film and also afterwards during the discussion I of course got reminded of my years as a single mom and how often. I felt overwhelmed, lonely, sad and anxious. I can feel for these women and I know that support from friends, family or like-minded people is essential to see light at the end of the tunnel.”
“Thank you very much for the wonderful film you showed yesterday. It was very thought-provoking and well presented. Since I am a banker, I found your explanation of poverty in numbers to be extremely telling and easy to understand.
“I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of you for producing and sharing this wonderful documentary with us. The result of your hard work, passion and dedication was a truly memorable and impactful film. Many of you have expressed your appreciation for putting on such a wonderful event that shines a light on love and touches the audience on a personal level, with the strength, background, culture and history of single mothers.”
I come from a rural area in Kyushu, where I saw children from single-parent households struggling to make ends meet. I believe your work has the potential to make a significant impact on the world! I am passionate about addressing poverty among women, and I hope this film can create opportunities for women to thrive in society.
Your documentary was really great! I am not a single mother, but I am doing my best as the breadwinner of my family as my husband isn’t working. I was very encouraged by the women in the film. I learned for the first time that being a single mother in Japan can be tragic. There are so many new discoveries after watching your movie and I appreciate everything I have now, my kids and family, thanks to your movie.
I hope that this movie will reach many people. If there is anything I can do to help you, I will always cooperate. I will continue to support you!
Beautiful! Well done, you!
